Send Users a Welcome Notification to Set an Initial Password

Laravel Welcome Notification is a new package by Freek Van der Herten to send a welcome notification to new users. The welcome notification contains a secure link where the new user can set an initial password.

The package adds a welcome_valid_until column to the users database table, which the package uses to generate a temporary signed route. You can kick off the process of sending the welcome email and set the validation expiration date:

$expiresAt = now()->addDay();

$user->sendWelcomeNotification($expiresAt);

This package has quite a few customization options, such as customizing the mail message or swapping out an entirely different notification class. Be sure to check out the readme.

Automate App Setup with Laravel Initializer

 

Have you ever found yourself writing multiple manual steps to set up a Laravel application in a new environment? Laravel Initializer is a convenient way to automate installing and updating a Laravel application:

Laravel Initializer gives you the ability to declare multiple processes and run them with app:install and app:update artisan commands, which run predefined actions chain depending on the current environment.

The app:install and app:update commands use two distinct classes that run commands based on a given environment. First, the install command uses the App\Install class:

You can also inject dependencies from the service container if you need to access services while running commands.

This package contains a variety of runner actions you should check out in the readme. I found the MakeCronTask dispatch interesting:

MakeCronTask adds the following to the server’s crontab list:

* * * * * cd /path-to-your-project && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1

You can do other things like creating a supervisord config for a typical queue worker or horizon.

Laravel Translation Scanner

 

The vemcogroup/laravel-translation package by Henrik B Hansen scans your applications for translations and creates your translation JSON files.

The app also has a configuration property for a poeditor API key and project ID, which allows you to upload/download poeditor features.

To use this package, once installed, you run the provided artisan command to scan the project:

php artisan translation:scan

The command creates a base_language.json file in the resources/lang directory.

To work with poeditor, you can run the following commands in your app:

# Upload
php artisan translation:upload

# Scan the codebase and then upload
php artisan translation:upload --scan

# Download translation languages
php artisan translation:download

Finally, you can even create public JavaScript translations files that are available on window.i18n with:

php artisan translation:create-js
