WordPress vs. Shopify

WordPress and Shopify are both a popular solution in the present e-commerce industry. WordPress and Shopify have some common similarities, but also there are many differences between them. Here, we are going to discuss the comparisons between WordPress and Shopify.

WordPress vs. Shopify

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS). It is written in PHP and connected with MySQL or MariaDB database. It was developed primarily as a blogging tool but has now evolved into a flexible CMS. It can be used to create a blog, website, and mobile applications. It is also used to create an online store using WordPress plugins.

WordPress is one of the most popular content management system (CMS) solutions in use. It is used by more than 60 million websites, including 34% of the top 10 million websites until 2019.

WordPress is developed by its founders, American developer Matt Mullenweg and English developer Mike Little, and it was initially released on 27 May 2003. The software licensed under the General Public License (GNU).

What is Shopify?

Shopify Inc. is a multinational company of e-commerce. It is an e-commerce paid tool platform used in online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. It provides online retailers with a service suite, including marketing, payments, delivery, and customer experience tools, to simplify the operation of small merchant online stores. It was developed by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake in 2004.

Main Differences between Shopify and WordPress

  1. WordPress is free and an open-source Content Management System (CMS), which is based on PHP and uses MySQL or MariaDB database, while Shopify is an E-Commerce platform.
  2. WordPress is used for the online platform, whereas Shopify can be used for both online and offline platforms.
  3. WordPress has a limited number of templates, and most of them are not free to use, while Shopify offers a wide range of templates that's are free to use.
  4. Being an open-source solution, WordPress may be an acceptable choice for small business needs, while this may not be the case for Shopify.
  5. As an e-commerce platform, Shopify already has a hosted site, so it offers much better security than WordPress.
